Australian Camp and Dhampus Village Trek

The trip starts after a well-prepared breakfast in Pokhara, an hour smooth drive from Pokhara takes us to Kande at an altitude of 1700 meters from sea level, the starting point of this short trekking of Australian Camp and Dhampus Village trek. This is an easy village walk and a nice hike of 1 night 2 days for the amazing experience of luxury holidays near Pokhara Valley. 

Where is the Australian Camp located?

Australian Camp set on the beautiful hilltop offers striking views over the valleys and stunning views of the Annapurna Mountain range. The place is located in the north-west of Pokhara. After driving for about an hour, we start our hike from Kande. The trail is steep; through a stone staircase for about 1.5 to 2 hours to get to Australian Camp, situated on the ridge and has an incredible view of Annapurna South (7219m), Hiunchuli (6440m), Machhapuchhre (6993m) and Lamjung Himal. From Australian Camp we will hike down to continue through a perfect jungle trail with birds chirping sounds our trek to continue to the beautiful village of Dhampus takes about an hour. Dhampus village is on the Annapurna trekking trail and is blessed with majestic views of the Annapurna Himalayan Range. The village is attractive, with several old-fashioned slate-roofed houses. The trek is best for those wishing to experience Nepal's mountain scenery and ethnic culture within a short time.

After Dhampus village one more hour to walk down to Phedi through the terraced rice fields and we also can extend this small luxury trek with 1 Night stay at Sarangkot which is best popular for its panoramic view offering stunning sunrise view along with brilliant mountain scenery, a delightful view of Pokhara valley, Phewa Lake. Especially in the nighttime we can enjoy the beautiful night lights of Pokhara City. We categorized this short trip as a luxury lodge trek to Annapurna at the request of our valued clients.

History of Australian Camp

The real name of Australian Camp is actually “Thulo Kharka” meaning big pasture. It used to be a seasonal herding place for buffalo and cow herders from the villages below Dhampus and others. It was unknown or less walked by trekkers till the early 90s while Phedi – Dhampus - Pothana – Deurali – Landruk – Chhomrong route for Annapurna Sanctuary Trek aka Annapurna Base Camp was already popular, the route is just 15 minutes away to the west of it. It is said that during the late 80s, people from Austria found it so beautiful and they used to come and camp there for several days as it is so peaceful and pristine offering mesmerizing Mountain View. Since then people started to call it the Austrian camp and as it is difficult to pronounce for local Nepalese people they pronounced it Australian camp this is how the place got its new name Australian Camp. 

Sleeping and eating

There are several lodges at Australian Camp, they facilitate eating and sleeping, most guest houses offer en-suite rooms, WiFi is available, the good mobile reception. Angel Guest House is the best. Sometimes the place is crowded; mostly during the weekends as many Nepalese now hike on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). 

Package Cost

Guide in Himalaya offers a one-night two-day package of USD 99 for our foreign clients based on a minimum of two clients basis and NPR 8300.00 for Nepalese clients based on a minimum of 4 people basis. We also can include a breakfast break at Sarangkot in Bhanjyang Restaurant to enjoy a great Mountain View from there and the itinerary is still 1 Night 2 Days Trip but the cost is US$ 119 per person.
